Work to promote
the Zumbro River Valley is underway!
Quick-Start Grants were awarded to community
groups from towns along the Zumbro River for
projects that will promote the lower Zumbro
River Valley. The grants are part of a Community
Growth Initiative process, which has been facilitated
by the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation.
Projects that were funded are: an
RV park in Hammond on lots that cannot be built
upon again after the September 2011 flooding;
preliminary work to create a Zumbro Valley
bike trail that would link the Douglas and Pioneer
trails on the west outside of Zumbrota to the
Great River Ridge Trailhead in Plainview; and
an Art Tour of barn quilts and free-standing
art billboards along Hwy. 60 from Zumbrota to
Towns rally to creat
a Zumbro Valley Community Foundation!
Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation offered
$20,000 in grant funding through the CGI process,
but only $7,500 was requested for the Quick
Start grants. The remaining $12,500 is
being offered to establish a Zumbro Valley Community
Foundation. Community leaders in the Zumbro
Valley are working to raise the matching funds
so that this new non-profit foundation can be
formed. This new foundation's goal will
be to create a self-sustaining mechanism for
funding projects that promote the economic and
community development goals for towns along
the Zumbro River between Zumbrota and Wabasha.
